Today, at the Markham Convergence Centre in the Greater Toronto Area, Dalton Founder and CEO Peter Pekos presided over ceremonies which marked the official entry of York Region’s Regional Innovation Centre (RIC), VentureLab, into the Ontario Network of Excellence. The principal speaker was the Ontario Minister of Research and Innovation, Glen Murray, who emphasized the commitment of the McGuinty government to fostering innovation in the Province. The list of dignitaries included Michael Chan, Ontario Minister of Tourism and Culture, Reza Moridi, MPP for Richmond Hill and Parliamentary Assistant to Minister Murray, and Mamdouh Shoukri, President of York University.
The Ontario Network of Excellence (ONE) is a collaborative network of regional innovation centres across Ontario, and is an important part of the aggressive innovation agenda to ensure that the Province will continue to flourish in the fiercely competitive global marketplace. As a member of ONE, the York Region RIC will operate with well-defined organizational mandates, will receive funding from the Ministry of Innovation to cover eligible overhead costs, and will deliver ONE programs and services to help entrepreneurs and researchers commercialize creative ideas. Peter Pekos has a deep, long-standing, interest in promoting innovation in Ontario and the GTA. In addition to his role as CEO of Dalton, he will serve as the founding Chairman of the Regional Innovation Centre of York Region. In his introductory remarks to the assembled guests, he said, “The need for an innovative economy with globally competitive companies is even more urgent today. I am thrilled to be involved in Ontario’s next wave of investment in building our knowledge-based economy.” He invited the audience to join in converting the vision for robust innovative company creation into reality through the alignment of all levels of government with industry and academia.
