Valued Employees Boost the Bottom Line

Developing new medicines that are safe and effective is extremely difficult; some say it is not rocket science…it is harder. Much of new drug creation today depends on contract manufacturers to take a sponsor’s idea and work with expert teams bringing it through the development path to the market. Besides the regulatory and technical manufacturing requires the highest level of employee performance to succeed. Many projects we undertake are highly complex and require exceptional levels of creativity and collaboration.  As a result, an employee culture of hard work and passion is essential to ensure projects are completed on time and on budget without compromising quality.

I have long believed that valued and appreciated employees are more productive, cooperative and the creativity that flows from the state of mind provided by a safe work environment is essential to manage the various unexpected issues that crop up while developing innovative medicines.

At Dalton Pharma Services we have strived to create an environment that fosters a culture of work-life balance, stress management, recognition of individual contributions, and passion to achieve desired outcomes for our clients’ projects. Of the many benefits that we offer, the most important is flexible work time to help employees manage life’s everyday necessities, such as daycare.

Although building a culture of employee engagement has not been without missteps and naiveté, we have remained steadfast in our conviction of the benefits of this approach. There is now a body of substantial empirical data that has validated our belief that a positive company culture improves productivity and boosts bottom-line financial outcome. A good source for reference data, as well as testimonials from businesses in various sectors, can be found at www.greatplacetowork.ca. A few of the conclusions from US, UK, and Canadian studies are:

  1. For motivation of extra effort by employees, “feeling encouraged and peer recognition” significantly outranks “money and benefits”;
  2. Management respect as perceived by employees is correlated with reduced turnover, better health, better customer orientation, and better performance.
  3. Organizations recognized as more oriented toward employee contentment tend to be more profitable.

In 2016, Dalton Pharma Services was certified as a Great Place to Work in Canada by a respected, globally active, institute using established methodology based on employee feedback.  The benefits of independent third party certification are numerous, including credibility and comfort for clients and prospects, and ease in attracting top talent.  Perhaps most important, however, is that the company acquires data, analysis, and benchmarks to more effectively continue to build a positive workplace culture.

Dalton continues to evaluate new hires in terms of their fit into our positive cultural values as well as their outstanding attributes and accomplishments.  We promote employee cohesiveness and interpersonal and interdepartmental relations. We are committed to the involvement of our employees in decisions designed to advance the positive culture at Dalton, which I believe has been a key factor in our success.
